The Future

Why Does The Future Often Look Bleak?

I was chatting to my lady tonight and saying I had noticed now more than ever that many people seem to be worried about the future. “Really worried,” I said. And their worry comes out in conversation, blogs, articles and life itself.

It seems that people are covering up the basic wound of the fact that nothing seems to last; not only that, she said, “well looked at it in a negative way, they probably think the future looks bleak.” I said to her “how so?” And she said, “Well, when all is said and done everyone is going to die.”

My God I hadn’t really thought about it like that; not that I hadn’t thought about death because in fact death has been a source of inspiration to me in many ways. It has helped me live intensely and to try and not waste a second of life’s gift and postpone my life like I did many years ago.

Essentially of course, the future has always looked bleak if seen through the eyes of someone who is constantly running after success on the outside. It’s only when the same person sees that after years of running and running, they have really got nowhere of any value, does the real search for significance begin.

If so much searching on the outside for success has borne little fruit then surely the direction has been wrong.

A person will only really turn inwards when everything on the outside and in the outside world has failed them; when everything is pure frustration. Now, I know that without this beautiful world of ours, that so often seems to frustrate and obstruct us, we would never begin the search for ourselves.

In fact we would have to create an artificial world especially designed to frustrate us, so that eventually we get the message and begin the pilgrimage to know ourselves.

When the time has come that you have been totally frustrated by the outside world and all exterior journeys have lost their meaning, when any outgoing activity seems meaningless, only then does the desire and the longing for something else open up, not before.

As far as humanity is concerned the future has always looked bleak ever since we were expelled from our mother’s womb.

Truthfully, that was the greatest trauma we will ever have where we were so cosy, comfortable and secure, all our needs looked after, nothing to worry about and all of a sudden there we were cast out of the Garden of Eden. No wonder the future can look bleak …………………and then we die.

However there can be a new dawn if we do a 180 % turn inwards so NO, I don’t think the future looks bleak at all because doesn’t everybody keep talking about living in the present moment.

So I will make every effort to remember that, won’t you?
