If we choose some work in which we believe, then it is vital that we understand that there will be some rules that go with the game.
It’s only smart to first consider the rules of the particular game we’re playing to find out whether we are comfortable with these rules.
In most jobs wearing a tie is an acceptable part of the rules of the game and though this has been changing for years, it still hangs around. But old habits die hard and if you are not comfortable with this rule then either see your role as a game and simply play the game watching yourself and the actors involved or change your job description.
There are rules everywhere and it is purely commonsense not to get identified with these rules, as they are not “YOU.” They are simply rules of a game to which people for some time have subscribed. Many of these rules will be broken one at a time, slowly.
Many are the rules and many are the different norms in our society and we need to come to terms with them.
The problem arises when the weight of the rules of the game overwhelms you; this is perhaps when you should consider whether you are in the wrong game and whether you should change the game.
There are a few indicators that may help you in the work and career scenario.
One is that you should choose a game where your talents and skills can be expressed without too much restraint. In this way you will feel fulfilled and at the same time you’ll be able to flow in what you are doing, giving full expression to your creativity.
If the game that you choose is compatible with your individuality, then you have a good match and you will be more easily able to give it your full dedication.
This dedication is paramount to any long-term success, as the pressures of life tend to impinge on our best intentions and resolutions.
The key thing to remember is that if there are rules involved, know well that it’s a game.
If you can’t do what you love, then do the only other intelligent thing and that’s to love what you do.
