Medicine for a Happy Life

The Warrior Chieftain’s Medicine for a Happy Life

Everyone intuitively knows what it is that will ultimately fulfil them.

This may seem simplistic when it is equally obvious that many of us are stumbling, falling, getting up again and soldiering on. But this “soldiering on,” comes at a very great cost as many discover along the way.

So the question begs for an answer. What is it that you feel is your medicine for navigating life’s sometimes treacherous and unpredictable waters? And what is it that will ultimately fulfil you?

The Warrior Chieftain in the land of the Aboriginal Dreaming, has his own medicine; in many native tribes the Shaman, The Shaker, Medicine Man, Warrior Chieftain is regularly paid or given gifts as long as the client or tribe member is well. As soon as he or she becomes sick, all gifts and payments stop immediately.

Could this method of payment apply equally in the world of business where the Advisor, Consultant or Coach gets paid as long as the Client Company is healthy? A good question but not the issue for this blog post.

In the Land of the Aboriginal Chieftain, where I used to live there are a series of mountains representing his body. These mountains are in the Shire of Byron Bay.  When I drove backwards and forwards in this incredibly beautiful part of the world I could see his aquiline profile, made up the peak of a Mountain called Mount Warning.  The rest of his body stretches for a number of kilometres across the landscape and anyone can see that it represents the body of a very impressive person in a lying position.

In fact, it looks like a Warrior Chieftain. This string of small mountains is one of the most impressive sites that anyone will see driving from the Brisbane or Gold Coast airport to the Byron Bay area. It is magical!!

Now we get to the moral of the story of the Warrior Chieftain’s medicine for a happy life.

In the land of the Dreaming which is so much part of the way many Aboriginals used to live, it is said that We are all part of His dreaming. This approach, even for a different culture conjures up the feeling that we are only actors in a play on the stage of life as Shakespeare said.

If we can distance ourselves once in awhile, from the part we are playing whether it be as business person, doctor, plumber, salesman, mother, wife, husband, lover, we can occasionally catch a glimpse of the person we think we are.

So, the Warrior Chieftain’s medicine is to dis-identify from your thoughts, actions, feelings (as if they belonged to someone else), and if you can do that, you will have that same secret as the Warrior Chieftain, and that is to remember that this life is a dream. It is one in which we all have a part to play but a dream nonetheless.

Living a life with a more detached view of ourselves in fact gives us more sensitivity, enjoyment and grace; it is not living life with a cold detachment; it is a very real participation in the world, doing all that we can and accepting fully all the feelings that come with being human.

Anyway, this is the Warrior Chieftain’s way to happiness. What’s your way and is it giving you the happiness you deserve?
